Naom Zimin

The most important aspect of my work is the ability to convey my sensibilities about the natural world, the spiritual, and the human essence. My aspiration is that it elicits a response in the viewer and generates a dialogue with others. The “group processes” in both anagama firing and theater are a significant element of my creativity. It allows me to connect to a deeper experience of my inner world, teaching me how to share with others.

My recent theater experience in Spoleto Italy focused on similar results. I wrote and performed a personal story about my combat experiences in the Israeli army. In doing so I was able to convey the universal elements of emotional trauma and spiritual growth in a monologue. In that format I was able to use my own body and voice as a “vessel” to share my inner world with others.

In my square vessels, the wheel-throwing process is used to produce works that retain an organic nature while incorporating spiritual symbolism and man-made elements. Completing the pieces in an anagama kiln integrates the alchemy and uncertainty of transformation with a dialogue between the firing crew and the natural element of fire.
