I have a strong connection with the animal world. The horse paintings come
from an incident when I was a young man living with my grandmother on a
ranch near Phoenix, Arizona. One day I was barreling along on the Black
Canyon freeway in my truck when I see a horse loose in the fast lane. I slam
on the brakes and get out and call the horse. “Come,” I say, “Don’t be afraid.
It’s safe here with me.” Cars jet by us as we stand there on the freeway, man
and horse, his head on my shoulder. We get off the freeway together. Before
that I was an abstract painter. I start to paint horses. People who buy them
call them “Spirit Horses.” They’re magical. I’ll probably always paint them.
