_______Dennis George______

My first introduction to pottery was in 1978 while in the midst of a 20-year career with the U.S. Coast Guard. Due to the demands of military life my involvement in the art was very limited until my retirement in 1988. My love of the clay remained, however, and after moving to Denver to assume the position of State Boating Safety Coordinator, I gradually resumed my study of the art. In 1997 I gave up the bureaucratic life and moved to Albuquerqueto pursue pottery on a full time basis.

I was trained at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City MI., College of Charleston, Charleston S.C. and Arapahoe Community College in Littleton CO

I have displayed my work four times in the New Mexico Arts and Crafts Festival where I received the Best First Time Exhibitor Award in 1999 as well as the 3rd Place Jurors Award and Best Booth Appearance Award in 2000. I also displayed my work in the 2000 Southwest Arts Festival. In November 2001 I was honored to have two of my pieces selected for display among the 100 works of art in “Ashes to Art” in San Francisco, CA. “Ashes to Art” was the first internationally juried fine art and craft exhibition of vessels for funerary ashes.

The drama of viewing the pieces as they’re subjected to the maelstrom of fire and smoke in the kiln. The beautiful yet totally unpredictable results of the process as the pieces literally rise out of the ashes and reveal themselves after the interminable wait for them to cool. These are the things that constantly draw me to the Raku and Anagama wood firing techniques. Based deeply in ancient Japanese/Korean methods both are as satisfying for the execution as for the results.
