Artist Statement
My work stems from the experimentation
with light. I explore the
beauty of light, color and texture on different surfaces
including
glass, canvas, wood and paper. My diverse work includes abstract
figures, realistic portraiture and close-up views of nature.
Much of my artistic inspiration comes
from traveling to Europe,
Africa and the Canary Islands. My series entitled Faces of
Africa
includes five charcoal & pastel drawings of Africans
I was
acquainted with during my travels. It is my hope the viewer feels
drawn to look deeply into these faces. Each one has a message
to communicate, and finding it gives these individuals a voice.
Another source of inspiration is nature.
Painting the magnificence
of a flower, for example, reminds me of the enigmatic beauty of
Creation. The window paintings of flowers are especially glorious
as the sunlight shines through them, exposing the vibrant colors
and brushstrokes. I paint close-up views of nature because the
process uplifts my spirit as well as the viewers.
